Last night, 30th May 2013, Tony and I attended the opening of the LBCM appeal at East Kirkby, Lincolnshire at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Museum to see the unveiling of the winning design for the memorial.
Entering the hanger to the sound of the band playing ‘The Dambusters’ music and facing the towering Lancaster bomber ‘Just Jane’ was breath-taking.
The short remembrance prayers followed by two minutes silence was the most profound silence I’ve ever experienced… pregnant with meaning, resonant with memories and the significance of what Bomber Command achieved – those who died and those who survived to keep silent for years!
The event was incredibly moving… the film sequences of 617 Squadron, the music accompanying it, the voice of Richard Todd reading and the quote:
When you go home, tell them of us and say: ‘For your tomorrow we gave our today.’
