Alice Lea born in 1858 in a tiny village called Yorton, Shropshire married my G Grandfather in 1887 in Clive, Shropshire. Her father was a labourer/gardener and in the 1881 census it was surprising to see that neither she nor her sisters were working. Maybe the enumerator didn’t ask about the work of the daughters in the family… but I’m sure that they wouldn’t all have been at home!
I’ve been able to see ALL the houses in which they lived (as a couple) as recorded by the census returns… Here’s a good tip! Go to Google maps and have a look in Street View to see if your ancestor’s house is still there. Take a ‘screen shot’ and include the image of their house in your research.
It’s fascinating to see where they lived and to imagine their life within the walls. I’ve always wanted to write to the people currently living there and tell them about the former occupants… not dared to yet, though!
